Mattie - Building a geared bike can get pretty involved. After upgrading components I realized how much subtly & expertise there was in getting things to work perfectly. But it could be a lot of fun. I'd look around for a good local shop to offer some guidance. Having something as a starter might be a big help. And I also think that it takes some time on a bike to just figure out what you want. Duct Tape! Of course.
